This does not work until the textarea is manually resized. Chrome 27.

The trick is based on two steps:
1. calculate scrollbar width using this method: http://www.alexandre-gomes....
2. calculate width of the wrapper div: (iframe_width - scrollbar_width).

Try your demo in Chrome/Safari: insert some text into the textarea and then press the "Page Up" or "Page Down" keys on your keyboard.

Sorry, actually that didn't work (it needed .width anyway). But you can fix that problem with some CSS: word-wrap: break-word;

I found one problem. If there is a long, unbroken string of text, the scroll width will be larger than the desired width. To fix this, you could use getClientRects() like this: var textareaWidth = document.getElementById("textarea").getClientRects()[0];

Hi THere,

I was looking for something else - how to hide scrollbars in regular divs while maintaining scroll action - when I googled to your page. I will use it somewhere in the future I'm sure. It is a nice small and to the point solution.
